Report cards were issued to students on Tues. Nov. 23
S.S. 9
Students have started their study of First Nations groups in Canada. We will continue on with this for another week, with students writing their test on Friday, Dec. 3. There will be a voicethread project for this unit, which will require students to do some work at home or outside of class time using a computer. The midterm exams have been marked, and students were told their marks on Thursday - we will go over the exams with students some time this week.
We have one more chapter to complete before the Christmas break, as when we return from the break, we have only 3 weeks left before the semester is over.
English 12
Students are continuing with the study of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. The have had to complete one voicethread so far, and the second will be due next week. For students who wrote the provincial exam, they do not know their marks yet, but they should check the BC Ministry of Education's website sometime in the next week or two and their marks should be there.

Nov. 15 - 19
Report cards go home next week.
S.S. 9
Students wrote their chp. 5 test and midterm exam this week. They are now finished with chps. 1 - 5, so they can take the work for these chps. out of their binders and put it somewhere safe incase they haven't handed all of it in for marks. We will begin chp. 7 next week and will have 7 and 8 completed before the winter break. That leaves 9 and 10 for when we return. Students should have handed in their French Revolution and Napoleon posters last week - we are still waiting for a few. Students are still working on the chp. 5 powerpoint project, which is due Monday, Nov. 29.
Chp. 7 is a study of First Nations groups in Canada. It is one of the easier chapters in the textbook, and students tend to enjoy it.
English 12
Students have finished their poetry unit, and we will now begin our study of Shakespeare's Caesar.
We are still waiting for several students to complete required assignments from last term. They must get these completed in order to receive a mark for English 12.

Students wrote their chp. 3 test on Friday and started chp. 4 by working on a crossword puzzle using the vocabulary from the chp. With the completion of the French Revolution, we will now study Napoleon and some of his campaigns. There is a combined project for chps. 3 & 4, which students began on Thursday. This will not be due for a while, as we will need to finish chp. 4 first. They will have another class in the library computer lab well before it is due.
English 12.
Most students presented their 2 minute speeches on Thurs., and they were great! It is never easy to speak infront of one's peers. We have started studying poetry and will do several exam preps. throughout this unit. If students have not submitted their 3 initial synthesis essays, or their final synthesis essay for marking, they will need to do that ASAP - these are worth significant marks.

We have started chp. 3, which is all about the French Revolution. Students have been watching a History channel documentary which is quite well done, and depicts the events in a movie-style fashion. Students will continue to work on this chp. next week, writing their test for it on Friday, Oct. 15. They will receive their study sheet for the test in Tuesday's class. The chp. 3 project is combined with chp. 4, so they will begin their project next week, but it will not be completed until chp. 4 is finished.
It looks like most students submitted their chp. 2 projects, which is GREAT!
English 12
Students should have finished writing all 3 of their required synthesis essays, and now will have to pick their best one to polish and submit for final marking. This is a significant mark, so it is essential that they do a great job on this. Their final copy of the synthesis essay needs to be submitted on Wed., Oct. 13. The last assignment for the short story unit is for students to prepare a 2 minute speech which they will be presenting on Thurs., Oct. 14.
We will begin our poetry unit next week as well. Within this unit, there will be some preparation for the provincial exam.
Students wishing to write the November exam, should sign up with Ms. Confortin ASAP.

S.S. 9
Students have been working on the English Revolution, and have almost finished up the unit. They wrote their test today, and next Monday they will have some more computer lab time to finish up the newspaper project that they started this week. The project will be due on Friday, but they will only have one more class to work on it. Please remember that all projects are required for the course, so it is essential that students submit it. If students are unable to finish the project during class time, then they will have to go into the library computer lab before/after school, or at lunch.
We are starting to notice some students are not completing and submitting their homework assigns., and as a result they are spending time with us at lunch to catch up on their missing work.
English 12
We have been working on our short story unit and on Wednesday, Oct. 6, students will write their short story test. They must know their literary terms for this, as well as for the provincial exam. To date students have written 2 synthesis questions, and they will be writing their 3rd one next week. Students have been struggling with this and need to work on improving their focus for these essays, as they are a major component of the provincial exam.

There will not be a test for chp. 1; however, there will be information from chp. 1 on the chp. 2 test in approx. 2 weeks time. We continue to urge students to use their planner sheets so that they can stay on top of their assigns., as well as earn 5%.

Social Studies 9
Well the first week of high school is over, and it seems as though we have all survived. Once again, it was nice to have only the grade 9's here on Tuesday, as it allowed us to get them somewhat settled before the older students arrived on Wednesday.
We have started the class with a study of basic geography skills. So far this week we have looked at why maps are useful; the important parts of a map, and compass directions. Next week we will move on to map scales; latitude and longitude; atlas work; we will complete maps of Canada and Europe, and begin chapter 1 of our textbook. At this time, it looks like the Geography test will be on Friday, Sept. 17.
English 12
English 12 is in full swing. The first day started with students writing an in-class essay based on the prompt "Surprises make life interesting". This assignment gave the class a taste of what the provincial exam will be like at the end of the semester.
We continued the week with a short unit studying the art of essay writing. Students participated in their first marked group discussion. Over the weekend, students will be writing a persuasive/response essay on the topic of cheating. Next week we will finish off the essay unit, and begin our short story unit.
Have a nice weekend everyone!
